Baseball Clinic Memberships

The Mo Vaughn Baseball Academy offers a variety of baseball clinics for kids ages 5-18 at our indoor facility in Boca Raton. Our goal is to create a fun and engaging atmosphere for kids as they learn the fundamentals of the game. Come join Mo Vaughn and other elite professional coaches for an unforgettable learning experience!

My son has been taking lessons with Coach Joe on Monday and Tuesday afternoons— and although he’s quiet during his time— he can NOT stop talking baseball, swings, dropping the back knee… He is loving life right now! This experience has really helped my little guy grow in baseball skills, his drive to practice towards succeeding, and his overall confidence in himself. You guys have something awesome over there. Worth our 45+ minute drive! A major “Thank you” to Coach Joe!

clinic descriptions

Pick any clinic you want when you want.

Multi Skills Clinic

  • The Multi Skills Clinic is designed for kids who are still discovering their passion for the game. It is ideal for beginners, because unlike the Hitting Clinic or position-specific clinics, it covers all aspects of the game.
  • Players learn the basic elements of fielding ground balls, catching fly balls, throwing, hitting, and base running. There is also a brief introduction to pitching mechanics.
  • The Multi Skills Clinic places a stronger emphasis on basic rules and strategies of the game. Also, the younger players (5-6) will play scrimmage games to help learn these rules and strategies and improve their knowledge of the game.
  • The younger group (5-6) will be using softer balls for their safety.

HITTING CLINIC

  • The Hitting Clinic covers everything from how to hold a bat to how to finish your swing. Players learn their ideal grip, stance, load, stride, swing mechanics, and finish.
  • We emphasize the importance of an efficient lower body and remaining balanced throughout the entire swing.
  • We discuss the mental approach to hitting and how that approach will change depending on the situation.
  • Players learn about plate coverage, efficient swing path, and proper extension. They will also learn the importance and fundamentals of bunting and situational hitting.

Fielding

  • The Fielding Clinic emphasizes the importance of footwork and proper fielding mechanics.
  • We cover all aspects of fielding, including pre-pitch preparation, proper footwork when approaching a ground ball, fielding mechanics, and how to efficiently transition from a fielding to a throwing position.
  • Players will learn proper forehand and backhand techniques, allowing them to confidently field with one hand when necessary.
  • We cover double play feeds and pivots from shortstop and second base, short hops and long hops, and how to properly receive cut off throws from the outfield. Maintaining the correct posture is another focal point of the Fielding Clinic.
  • While we do work on fly balls and other outfield techniques, this clinic primarily emphasizes infield mechanics and footwork.
  • Players learn the basic elements of fielding ground balls, catching fly balls, throwing, hitting, and base running. There is also a brief introduction to pitching mechanics.

Catching

  • The Catching Clinic is great for young catchers of all skill levels.
  • Players will learn the proper positioning and posture behind the plate. They will also learn the correct technique for receiving the ball.
  • We cover the proper footwork and throwing techniques for steals and plays to all bases.
  • Players will learn how to properly frame pitches and block balls in the dirt.
  • The Catching Clinic covers passed balls, pop ups, and inside/outside throwing lanes for bunts and dropped strike three plays.

Pitching

  • The Pitching Clinic is taught by Retired MLB Player for Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves Ben Rivera.
  • Description coming soon!

Hitting & Fielding

  • The Hitting & Fielding Clinic on Saturdays combines the best aspects of each clinic into one 1 hour class.
  • We cover all aspects of fielding, including pre-pitch preparation, proper footwork when approaching a ground ball, fielding mechanics, and how to efficiently transition from a fielding to a throwing position.
  • The Hitting aspect covers everything from how to hold a bat to how to finish your swing. Players learn their ideal grip, stance, load, stride, swing mechanics, and finish.

I have had the privilege of working with Joe Cossuto in a number of different capacities. I served as bench coach on his two travel baseball teams (8U and 10U) in Westport, CT. He also coached two of my son’s for multiple years and gave them private lessons.

Joe is a good leader who possesses a great deal of knowledge about ALL aspects of baseball. From a coaching perspective, he is able to see, comprehend, and teach all aspects of the game as nothing seems to go unnoticed. His attention to detail helps him focus on the nuances of the game that others seem unaware of. This is what helps separate him from other coaches.

From a skill level standpoint, Joe excels at teaching footwork and agility. Being a former middle infielder he has an acute understanding of drill work that helps strengthen this part of a player’s game. I have seen this first hand as my son is a SS, and their work together helped develop his skill set and really help set him apart from other players his age. His knowledge is not limited to this particular area, as he understands all aspects of the game.

Max Landgraf

Joe has coached all three of our sons when they were ages 7-9 in various after-school programs and also some private lessons. Joe is particularly adept at keeping the younger kids entertained, active and enthusiastic. He has them work on basic skills and conditioning through a series of games and challenges than makes an hour pass quickly (and they come home sweaty, tired and happy). In short, Joe is fabulous with younger kids just learning the game, but can also transition to help older kids build skills, strategies and attitudes to thrive in baseball (and hopefully some life lessons from the benefits of working hard to achieve a goal)!

Head Clinic Instructor - Joseph Cossuto

Joe Cossuto has been coaching youth baseball for over a decade and has truly found his calling. Before joining the Mo Vaughn Baseball Academy in 2019, Joe spent 12 years as an instructor at Integrated Sports Training in Norwalk, CT and as a head coach in the Westport Youth Travel Baseball program in Westport, CT. He has over 10 years of experience doing private lessons with kids of all ages, from pre-K to the college level. Joe holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Southern Connecticut State University.

Founder - Mo Vaughn - The Hit Dog

Mo Vaughn had a notable 12-year Major League Baseball career with the Boston Red Sox (1991-98), Anaheim (1999-2000), and the New York Mets (2002-03).

Mo’s career highlights include a batting average of .293, 328 home runs and 1,064 RBI. Mo was a three-time American League All-Star with the Red Sox (1995, ’96 and ’98) and awarded the American League MVP in 1995 when he hit .300 with 39 HR & 126 RBI.

The “Hit Dog” became one of the most feared hitters especially in 1996 for Boston batting .326 with 44 HR & 143 RBI.

Vaughn was born in Norwalk, CT, and played at Seton Hall University. He was chosen by the Red Sox in the 1st round of the 1989 draft and began his professional career with Double-A New Britain. He spent all of 1990, at the age of 22, with the PawSox. He split the 1991 season between Pawtucket and Boston, returned briefly to Pawtucket in 1992 for 39 games, but then spent the rest of his career in the majors. A knee injury ended his career during the 2003 season.

Since leaving baseball, Vaughn has founded a number of businesses, including real estate and rehabilitating distressed housing in New York City boroughs, a trucking company called Mo Vaughn Transport, and a big-and-tall clothing brand called MVP Collections.

His latest endeavor is The Mo Vaughn Baseball Academy. Based in Boca Raton, Florida, the Academy offers professional baseball coaching, clinics and indoor batting cages for younger generation baseball players.

Witnessing his then 4-year-old son Lee play the game, Mo saw a need for younger kids to get professional level baseball coaching. He jumped into the position of “Coach Mo” for the Boca Raton PawSox and it’s what inspired him to launch the Mo Vaughn Baseball Academy.

Pitching - Ben Rivera - Retired Phillies & Braves

Bienvenido “Ben” Rivera Santana played Major League Baseball from 1992-1994 for the Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves. Before that, he played six years at the minor leagues with the Atlanta Braves Organization. He played for the Dominican Republic Winter Leauge from 1998 to 2005, as well as the Taiwan League, Korea, and Japan League. Currently Ben serves as Pitching Coach at Trinity International Christian Academy in Lake Worth, where the team won State Champion in 2016 and 2017 and privately trains and supervises young kids in pitching across South Florida.

Our Story

Retired MLB legend Mo Vaughn has watched his life come full circle. After spending over a decade dominating the big leagues, the 3X All-Star and 1995 A.L. MVP finds himself back on the diamond with a whole new perspective of the game. The “Hit- Dog” is now known as Coach Mo to his young son Lee’s travel team, the Boca Raton Paw Sox. This new position has reignited Mo’s passion for the game and sparked an immense desire to give back to the community. The Mo Vaughn Baseball Academy prides itself on its professional, elite-level coaching. Our coaches have the
unique ability to communicate with young players to make sure they understand the fundamental mechanics and techniques necessary to be successful. Our coaches are energetic, optimistic, and most importantly, they understand the psychological aspect of working with kids.

Our faith in Coach Joe’s abilities was validated when our son was chosen for the local 9U Travel Team this Spring, joining many of the same kids whose skills had impressed my wife and me years earlier. And during a recent skills evaluation prior to the local Little League draft, the kid who couldn’t catch or throw 2 years ago ranked in the top 5% out of the 70+ players who participated.
